The romantic days are over, when you could go around with a notebook in hand, like an artist, taking notes, drawing. In our days these sensations and the experience of sketching is gone. In any case, I think that there is still some romanticism even among the younger generations of contemporary artists. In the latter category we find, undoubtedly, Henrik Olai Kaarstein (Oslo, 1989), whose exhibition in Rome, at T293 is entitled 'Turning and returning'. The 23 year old artist attempts to grab that elusive and apathetic feeling you usually get in hotels, getting bored and observing that there is (entropically) less order as the time passes by. Crumpled bed sheets, soaked and twisted towels, stains from shampoo, dirt, a total disorder. All the things that have always intrigued the imagination of the artists - from Man Ray & Duchamp, to Kurt Schwitters and Merz, Robert Rauschenberg, etc. etc.. – having always interesting and unpredictable results. Kaarstein is based on his personal experience – to empty homes or stay in luxurious hotels, stealing the towels and so on - in order to create a detailed representation, which ranges from the prevailing element of the real to abstract images. After spending a summer collecting fabrics, the artist focuses on collecting towels, found / stolen / taken away from hotels, bars, saunas or in the trash. Laid down on the floor, squeezed, knotted and stretched with care or (seemingly) randomly, the artist fixes the towels on sheets of plexiglass or on floor tiles. Unfinished and unrefined, these collages stimulate the imagination for something beyond. Even the way these works are placed - a few centimeters from floor, this aesthetic of debris and 'refusal', the look and feel of 'down and dirty' - is not common. And if it is, then it comes to speculate on this banality and wonder. The feeling that these works bring to me is the same of a sketch made in pencil. The difference is that instead of the speed and distinctiveness of a sketch, Kaarstein prefers the long experimentation and reflection. I was told that the artist writes and rewrites, experiments, Suddenly, front becomes back and down becomes up; gestures which, within the concept, reveal a certain awareness (or at least it seems to). Feeling lost in the details or wonder about the artist's ability to work 'with little'? The sculptures in the exhibition-the part I enjoyed least - lose a bit of their importance, but I appreciated the works mounted on the walls. Designed according to the scales of a table and a bed, the two installations collect various objects from plastic lemons, pieces of cloth, glasses upside down, glue, pigments, etc..

All the show is conceived under this idea of duality. Keeping in mind that each one of us its a Double Alcoba… we are complex double beens. With an organic instinctive side in relation of a rational and structured part.
But this two parts are not always in balance.
It means something doesn't mach in the ways this double structure is done.
…
Nothing its determinate, just presented for a moment, install with a fragile red tape that has no intents of permanence, and goes into the space like the veins of one soft and live organism.
There are images of the gallery into the gallery and a continuos relation of the works.
...
Rome its one single and lonely thing. Its clear its compose by many elements but they are all together as part of a strong rational structure.
The frame its an element that extracts from the rest. And creates limits.
…is it possible to be outside the rest? Just in our minds. (But we believe we are.)
If we don't change this perception we will always "Use" things, people, plants, the planet…love…etc… as externals. And they will be over soon.
I believe we have to turn into a more female philosophy… less penetrant and damage. And I try to show it in each one of my works.
...
If I chose this images for the 50's its because their are still quite innocent in many aspects. They are images that suppose to detonate desire. And desire its what makes life moves.
But they are not aggressive and still not so fake or obvious in sexual therms like they are now.
there is still some intimacy preserve in them which I think its fundamental.
They work for me as Images of "Honest Beauty" and desire and I use them in order to recreate the origin of Venus…
...
Napoli its related to the Sea… as the origin of fluid life.
I guess something its not working very well… so its good to look at the origins.
We are the Alcoba Doble, and the Lovers inside!
Thanks so much for read my words…
My best,
Martin Soto Climent

Me li ricorderò...

Trine Trouderos, Tribune newspapers, 20 Dicembre 2010*

Giorno 2 TOP OF THE POP: Frieze Art Fair
Ryan Gander (Annet Gelink), Cosima Von Bonin (Daniel Buchholz), Frank Haines (Lisa Cooley), Scott King (Sonia Rosso), Anthea Hamilton (IBID), Lorna Simpsons (Salon 94), Marlo Pasqual (Casey Kaplan), Bernadette Corporation (Galerie Neu), Marc Camille Chamowicz (Galerie Giti Nourbakhsch), Rosemary Trockel (Sprueth&Magers), Ugo Rondinone (Sadie Coles), David Lieske e Lynette Yiadom-Boakye (Corvi Mora) Rachel Harrison (Greene Naftali).
Introvabile!
Cena con amici.
