ATP: Cos'è Bureau for Art Nerds?
ATP: Artisti, performers, editori, spazi indipendenti.

Bureau for Art Nerds/ Istituto Svizzero/ Valeria Sansone narrates…

ATP: What is the Bureau for Art Nerds?
Valentina Sansone: "Bureau for Art Nerds" is a series of two exhibitions and five events being held in Milan until June 26 (curated by Valentina Sansone) and produced by the Swiss Institute of Rome. Part of the project takes place in self-managed sites and in different areas of the city – at Casa Morigi (occupied since 1976), at the non-profit association for the promotion of artistic research O'all'Isola, at the non-profit gallery Gasconade in Porta Venezia, at the artistic high school “Caravaggio” near Via Padova. A second part of the "Bureau" is underway at the Swiss Institute in Milan, which on this occasion is promoting a network of connections to support individuals and institutional practices. The "Bureau"is involved with newly formed projects between Switzerland and Milan; Fluck | Paulus, an artist duo (Lauris Paulus) and a curator (Léa Fluck), which organizes exhibitions in a former pharmacy in Freiburg, the 'Anonima Nuotatori’, a project conceived by an artist (Yellow Concialdi) and a curator (Guido Santandrea), the Swiss artist Hannah Weinberger, one of the founders of the non-profit space Elaine MGK and before that, active with the collective New Jerseyy, both shown in Basel; the interdisciplinary project in 13 episodes "Full Moon Saloon," by Dafne Boggeri. Hotel Palenque, the nomadic program for the promotion of works by emerging artists, initiated by Elise Lammer (London-based, Swiss curator). Curtat Tunnel, a group formed by 4 artists based in Lausanne, and finally the production house for contemporary art Carrozzeria Margot.
ATP: What led you in making your curatorial choices?
VS: All invited projects share a predisposition on the organization of ephemeral events, regulated by an open system, depending on the aptitudes and interests of each specific group. For the event currently under way, Hannah Weinberger has presented her first project in Italy, 'Concerto Locale': a performance and a sound installation broadcasted on 40 audio channels at the Swiss Institute in Milan (until 24th June). Weinberger's performance in Milan was based entirely on the concepts of participation and aggregation, to create a local network with a common and shared practice.
ATP: Artists, performers, publishers, independent spaces. It is a project characterized by a multidisciplinary aspect. Expressions of our times?
VS: "Bureau for Art Nerds" highlights the unique and ephemeral character of a certain type of "action", characterized by a strong spirit of aggregation and the ability to unify different types of events at the same time (book presentations, live music events, exhibitions, contemporary dance, performances, lectures, DJ sets ...). The organization of the events in a single evening and the content of research is the fundamental basis of the programming of self-managed spaces in Switzerland and also on an international level. These "actions" often involve the local arts community, which revolves around the activities of the autonomous group and its networks.
ATP: It started on 10th May and ends on 26th June. What are the upcoming events?
VS: On Saturday, 9th June 9, the nomadic project Hotel Palenque presents a new production by the artist Pedro Wirz (Sao Paulo, Brazil, 1981. Lives and works in Basel) during an one-evening event at Gasconade, a non-profit space, initiated in Milan in 2011, which presents the work of Italian and international artists born in the eighties. On 25th June, the collective of Lausanne, Curtat Tunnel presents the sixth and penultimate meeting of the "Bureau for Art Nerds": a concert of the young musician Galopp from Zurich, followed by one of the leading representatives of independent music: Robert Steven Moore (1952, Nashville , USA), who during the last 40 years or more has produced 400 music products with his production company: The R. Stevie Moore Cassette Club. Curtat Tunnel curates the exhibitions, lectures and musical performances in the space at Lausanne and abroad. Over the past two years and with a specific approach on the underground music, Curtat Tunnel has organized live performances, lectures and collaborations with contemporary composers, such as the minimalist Tom Johnson. The last event of the "Bureau" is that one of Carrozzeria Margot and is set for 26th June. It includes a very special cocktail at Bar Tubino (Via Padova 30) with a presentation of the interventions taken place on Via Padova and the surrounding area, by the artists Anna Forlati (Padova , 1980) and Bignia Wehrli (Uster, Switzerland, 1979). It will follow a reading by the journalist Marco Valsecchi with the music of Veritas Invino by the artistic high school “Caravaggio” (from 20:00 to 22:00), together with students of the school, who participated to the preparation and organization of the evening.
ATP: What discoveries have you made during this “underground”1111 research?
VS: So far there have been many positive findings, starting from the extraordinary energy that projects are invited to invest in this program! Many of the sites 'outside' the ISR that have hosted our events were unknown to the public of contemporary art, for instance Casa Morigi, and this is strange, considering that it is a place with a tradition for linking local and international artists who are or were active in Milan. It is in fact the only example of self-management in the city, which lasted for 36 years. The effort to combine different self-managed entities within the same project has fruited. These kind of initiatives are closer to students and young artists than the institutes, as media and types of activities ... The Bureau was also a way to continue our research in Switzerland by approaching the city of Milan.
ATP: Expectations for the next project of the Swiss Institute in Milan?
VS: The Swiss Institute in Milan will present a new production of a young Swiss artist during STA

Concerto Locale / Hannah Weinberger / Istituto Svizzero a Milano

I attended the concert using my imagination. I went to see the post-performance of Hannah Weinberger at the Swiss Institute in Rome (ISR), based in Milan. The large room that hosted her 'Concerto Locale' - the title of the project – introduces amplifiers and speakers resting on top of empty rows of tables. On the air, a mix of noise, music, beats, confusing sounds accompanied by melodies. Sometimes I think you hear drums. Lots of dance music. It’s almost impossible to tell where a sound starts and where another begins. The artist and the curator Valentina Sansone, tell me how, the day before, a weird concert took place, thanks to the 40 performers that spread the news, mouth to mouth. Each participant – equipped with a computer or a smart phone, the appropriate software and a speaker - was led by Hannah to create a random, chaotic and unpredictable polyphony. Each performer had the chance to concentrate on her or his music, which was then ‘added’ to that of the other participant, thus creating a unique, hazy sound composition.
"The practice of aggregation, participation and comparison within the framework of a performance, an opening or an impromptu art event, are recurring elements in the work of Weinberger. Her sonar performance, her musical compositions and her sound installations always offer the opportunity of a meeting and of a shared participation, conceived as overlays and additions to systems seemingly closed, as in the case of interventions within the framework of a group show, where these are often the starting point for a co-production or a simple shared practice. A process that sustains a significant shift from the authoritarian and self-referential model, to an identification of the work within a group or a collective of ‘authors’, obliterating the hierarchies, and the established procedures. " (By CS)
