Christoph Meier mette in scena un nuovo progetto dal titolo greenpisellivideosculpture, in occasione della sua prima personale in Italia presso la galleria collicaligreggi (Catania).
L’artista
austriaco, come già in precedenti occasioni, propone una selezione di
opere già esposte (in questo caso presso la prestigiosa Secessione di
Vienna) combinandole con una nuova serie di sculture colorate che
testimoniano il suo recente interesse in ciò che di pittorico e grafico
esiste nella scultura. Le sculture sono dipinte in modo grossolano,
con una texture poco raffinata.
Una pittura “croccante”, come lui la
definisce, che tuttavia, proprio per la sua matericità, esalta la
qualità scultorea degli oggetti, a loro volta realizzati seguendo un
semplice metodo, unico per tutti: raggruppati e dipinti insieme, in modo
da influenzarsi vicendevolmente. Un processo volutamente precario e
dimesso che comunque evidenzia una posizione consapevolmente critica e
una personale necessità di misurarsi con il proprio tempo sia dal punto
di vista estetico che etico. Meier infatti, rispetto a una società arida
e a una conoscenza a cui si può accedere facilmente e a buon mercato
attraverso internet, propone un’arte diretta e semplice, dove l’autore
ha un'identità più vicina a quella di un’artista per hobby, piuttosto
che a quella di un autore di un’arte nobile, costosa e che finge
d’essere intelligente.
Egli piuttosto che offrire competenze
tecniche o intellettuali, preferisce nasconderle e far finta di non
essere interessato, cosciente che un atteggiamento apparentemente più
“superficiale” e “croccante” possa essere più efficace e comunicativo.

For his first solo show in Italy at the galleria collicaligreggi in Catania, Christoph Meier stages a new project entitled greenpisellivideosculpture.
The Austrian artist, like on previous occasions, presents a selection
of works displayed in the past (in this case, at Vienna Secession),
combining them with a new series of coloured sculptures, testifying to
his recent interest in the pictorial and graphic aspects of
sculpture. The sculptures are painted heavy-handedly, their texture
unrefined.
A ‘crusty’ kind of painting, as he himself defines it, yet
one which highlights the sculptural quality of the objects by virtue of
their very materiality. Here he uses a simple method, the same for all
of them: the objects are bunched together and painted, so as to
influence each other reciprocally.
Thus a deliberately precarious and
humble process which still highlights a knowingly critical position, as
well as a personal need to measure up to one’s own era, both from an
aesthetic and an ethical point of view. In fact, in the face of a
over-sophisticated society and a knowledge which may be easily accessed
at low cost via internet, Meier presents a direct and simple form of
art, in which the artist’s identity is more akin to that of those who
practise art as a hobby rather than those for whom it is a noble and
costly undertaking, labouring under the pretence of being intelligent.
Rather than sporting his technical or intellectual prowess, he prefers
to hide it away and pretend not to be interested, aware that an attitude
which is apparently more ‘superficial’ and ‘crusty’ may in fact be more
effective and communicative.
